Regulator not up to speed on taxi route, perhaps they should sit a test.
Q Taxi driver Brendan contacted Smart Consumer in relation to taxi fares and wants to highlight the fact that the fare calculator used on the Taxi Regulator's website may not produce the cheapest fares.
Brendan used the website to calculate the fare from Dublin Airport to Sallynoggin in Co Dublin, using a premium rate charge and including two passengers. The result shown was €61.20 to €76.60 for the 37.4km journey with price ranges based on no traffic or heavy traffic.
However, he writes, "I noticed the Taxi Regulator shows the M50 as the route. I would rarely use the M50 as I know the quick ways through town." So for comparison he put his route into the fare calculator. The estimated fare shown was €29.40 to €45.20. "The Taxi Regulator's website shows the longer routes," writes Brendan, "but good taxi drivers know the shorter routes, and in this case the fare is €30 cheaper!"
A The Taxi Regulator's office responded by saying that the "figure provided by the Fare Estimator is intended for illustrative purposes only", and that it employs a "fixed formula that cannot fully account for variable factors such as exceptionally heavy traffic, road closures, road blockages or difficult weather conditions."
It says "the Fare Estimator uses an engine provided by Google Maps. It is likely that such a journey from Dublin Airport defaults to the higher quality/capacity road, in this case the M50. We accept that a knowledgeable taxi driver may well find a more direct, quicker and therefore cheaper route. Clearly this is to the benefit of the consumer." In addition the National Transport Authority (of which the Taxi Regulator is a part) says it is "committed to reviewing the fare estimator tool on an on-going basis in line with wider technologicaly
